Our scientists are recognized worldwide for their high quality research. Centers offer the science and engineering community a venue for developing effective mechanisms to integrate scientific and technological research and education activities; to explore better and more effective ways to educate students; to broaden participation of underrepresented groups; and to ensure the timely transfer of research and education advances made in service to society.
Increasing the participation of a diverse U.S. citizenry, including women, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities, by creating opportunities and enabling them to contribute, is essential to the health and vitality of science and engineering.
STCs are encouraged to focus their education efforts on specific programs that are appropriately integrated into the research activities of the Center rather than attempting to be comprehensive. Participation in a Center does not preclude individuals from receiving NSF support for their individual research in complementary areas.
The Science and Technology Initiatives Fund (S&T) is a tool to catalyze research collaborations that strengthens the research enterprise of the University and brings economic benefit to the Commonwealth. Cold Regions Science and Technology is an international journal dealing with the science and technical problems of cold environments in both the polar regions and more temperate locations.
The evolution of science is like a boon to the world, as human beings come to know a lot about the world they are living in including the activities they indulge into. The agency operates no laboratories itself but does support National Research Centers, user facilities, certain oceanographic vessels and Arctic and Antarctic research stations. The technology that we develop not only helps us in our everyday lives, it also helps scientists increase human knowledge even further.
Science contributes to technology in at least six ways: (1) new knowledge which serves as a direct source of ideas for new technological possibilities; (2) source of tools and techniques for more efficient engineering design and a knowledge base for evaluation of feasibility of designs; (3) research instrumentation, laboratory techniques and analytical methods used in research that eventually find their way into design or industrial practices, often through intermediate disciplines; (4) practice of research as a source for development and assimilation of new human skills and capabilities eventually useful for technology; (5) creation of a knowledge base that becomes increasingly important in the assessment of technology in terms of its wider social and environmental impacts; (6) knowledge base that enables more efficient strategies of applied research, development, and refinement of new technologies.
The main difference between technology and science is technology is a machine while science is done by the minds of people. Our mission is to provide a distinctive and relevant education in an environment of scientific, technological, and professional knowledge creation and innovation to equip our graduates for a successful career in their chosen field.
