H-E-B is now accepting nominations for educators to apply for the 2019 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards Each year, these awards highlight a variety of educators who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of their students and communities.

Among the several amendments, the House will consider cutting school district’s tax rates even more, increasing funding for special education students, restoring a special pot of money set aside for gifted and talented programs, establishing a school safety allotment in the formulas, and automatically adjusting for inflation each year the base amount of money school districts get per student.

Over half a million dollars in grants and scholarships have been awarded to 30 students and 13 school communities. The Canyons Board of Education approved Tuesday a $50,000 starting wage for teachers this fall and a $7,665 annual raise for all certified teachers.

The chambers will need to negotiate how to give teachers pay raises, whether to adjust how students take standardized tests and how to provide long-term property tax relief for Texans. One in 10 teachers quit teaching in Texas schools after their first year, according to state records.

But unless teachers can figure out how to ensure students understand those texts—a task that gets increasingly difficult at higher grade levels, when assumptions about background knowledge increase—they don’t do much good. Today, the Texas Commission on Public School Finance met to discuss the recommendations of the Expenditures Working Group (EWG).

The board also approved across-the-board raises for all school employees, calculated on 3 percent of the district’s mid-point salary, effective with the 2019-20 school year. The Texas Education Agency today provided school districts with information regarding the 2018-19 benefits approval process under SB1882.

A bill expanding protections for private-school students from student-teacher misconduct has been unanimously passed in the Senate. At the same time, Christianity being only optional provides the necessary freedoms to students of other religions, or even atheists who do not want to be influenced by the religious thought.
